Broadside
Broadside Magazine was started in 1962 by Agnes "Sis" Cunningham and her husband Gordon Friesen. Broadside featured a mixture of typewritten songs, musical notation, and news stories cribbed from the recent headlines. Publication of Broadside lasted until the end of the 1970s. However, in 1982 the magazine was revived by Norman Ross and showcased a new generation of folksingers. Publication ceased permanently in the late 1980s leaving behind 100s of songs by some of the world's most influential folksingers.
People's Songs
Founded in 1946 by Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Lee Hays, Burl Ives, and Alan Lomax -among others- People's Songs aimed to find new ways of carrying on folk tradition in a post-war America. As suggested by Seeger, the original goal of People's Songs was to create a union of musicians who would stage hootenannies, maintain a collection of protest songs that could be used by various Labor movements, and have musicians who would venture to picket lines to perform. People's Songs was incorporated in 1946 and in February of that same year the first "People's Songs Bulletin" was published, containing primarily labor songs. The contents of the Bulletin would slowly expand to contain book reviews, and columns, among other things. The Bulletin was published monthly until 1949, when People's Songs was forced to shut down after the budget ran dry. However during its brief period of circulation more than 300 songs were published in "People's Songs Bulletin" -17 by Woody Guthrie alone. A year after People's Songs disbanded some of its former leaders would go on to found a new magazine, Sing Out!.
SingOut!
Begun as a newsletter in May 1950, Sing Out! magazine sought to utilize music to inform, educate, and engage individuals in regards to contemporary international political events. Sing Out! magazine has, since it's inception, included topical lyrics and their accompanying sheet-music; articles concerning relevant contemporary political and social issues; educational essays on topics such as leading groups in song; articles on folk music in other countries; book and album reviews; insightful letters to the editor ; and historical essays on music by critics such as Bela Bartok and A.L. Lloyd. Woody Guthrie has had a presence in the pages of Sing Out! since 1950, and his contributions include lyrics, articles, and correspondence. See below for a partial listing of Guthrie-related material in Sing Out! Sing Out! continues to be published today, and the Woody Guthrie Archives strives to maintain it's ever-growing collection of issues. Please contact the Archivist for availability of issues not included in this list.
Miscellaneous Periodicals
The Woody Guthrie Archives holds many single-issues of a variety of periodicals, reflecting articles by or about Woody Guthrie. In some instances the entire issue was maintained, while occasionally the article itself was razored from the journal. Many of these articles are from short run or otherwise ephemeral periodicals; while others are feature length articles from prominent journals. Of particular note in this collection is a complete six-year run from 1990-1996 of the Leadbelly Society's "Lead Belly Letter." (anchor to section) The collection of Miscellaneous Periodicals is organized into the following two series:
