WOODY GUTHRIE ARCHIVES AUDIO MATERIAL
Audio Recordings - Mixed Media
The Woody Guthrie Archives holds 76 ¼-inch reel-to-reel audiotapes containing original musical recordings, performances, and radio shows featuring Woody Guthrie and Guthrie family members dating between 1940-1975. In their original format, these reels could not be played back at the Woody Guthrie Archives; however, thanks to a generous 2010 grant provided by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, all of these 76 reels are available in digital format for in-house research.
Audio Recordings - Record Albums and Singles
7" 45 RPM
The 7" records include covers of Guthrie, Seeger, and Weavers songs, as well as
songs by other folk musicians prominent in New York City during the 1950s and 1960s.
10" 78 RPM
The 10" records include one-sided demo or promotional albums recorded in New York City at the Associated Recordings Studio.
12" 33 RPM
The 12" records include a recent donation of over two thousand Folk Music and related recordings that is currently being processed and added to our online Collection Guides.
Historic Family Recordings
The Woody Guthrie Archives holds 15 ¼-inch reel-to-reel audiotapes of historic Guthrie family recordings. Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, and/or Woody Guthrie, and/or their immediate family recorded the tapes between 1949 and 1958. The tapes include recordings of Guthrie family gatherings, including a December 1951 recording with Guthrie's mother-in-law Aliza Greenblatt and grandmother-in-law, dance classes conducted by Guthrie's wife Marjorie, and audio of the Guthrie children playing and talking. Thanks to a generous 2010 grant provided by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, these reels are available in digital format for in-house research.
Woody Guthrie's Personal Record Collection
Woody Guthrie’s Personal Record Collection consists of albums personally owned by Guthrie, as well as Albums released by Guthrie, and represents an important component to the Archives. These records provide researchers with insight into Guthrie’s own musical influences. Guthrie himself annotated many of the record jackets, noting how he acquired the record, the date he received the album, and his thoughts on either the artist or the lyrics. In addition, many of Guthrie’s albums are adorned with his original artwork – doodles and drawings covering the liner notes of some of the record jackets.
The Ludwig K. Rubinsky Collection of Record Album
The Ludwig K. Rubinsky Collection consists of 16 10" 78 RMP record albums donated to the Woody Guthrie Archives by Rubinsky's daughter, Melissa. This Collection highlights original Guthrie recordings, including a copy of "Documentary #1: Struggle" upon with Guthrie collaborated with Sonny Terry.
In additon, this collection includes other collaborative works, such as "Midnight Special" (Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston, and Leadbelly), and rare albums, including an original 1942 edition of Alan Lomax's "Smoky Mountain Ballads."
INTERVIEWS
Joe Klein Interview Tapes
While conducting research for his definitive biography on Woody Guthrie, Joe Klein interviewed approximately 100 individuals who knew Guthrie during his life. These tapes –which have been digitally transferred from the original audiocassettes – are a unique source of information not only on Guthrie, but also on those individuals being interviewed. Conducted in the 1980's, the interviews feature first-hand accounts from those close to Guthrie, many of whom were never interviewed elsewhere.

Audio Recordings - Mixed Media
(Accessions # 2009-16.01 - .93)
The Woody Guthrie Archives holds 76 ¼-inch reel-to-reel audiotapes containing original musical recordings, performances, and radio shows featuring Woody Guthrie and Guthrie family members dating between 1940-1975. In their original format, these reels could not be played back at the Woody Guthrie Archives; however, thanks to a generous 2010 grant provided by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, all of these 76 reels are available in digital format for in-house research.
The Woody Guthrie Audiovisual Collection is grouped into three series: Series I: Musical Recordings; Series II: Performances; Series III: Radio Shows. Tapes are arranged alphabetically by title within each series.
Series I: Musical Recordings consists largely of copies of commercial recordings containing Guthrie's songs. The content of many of these tapes is unclear, as there are a number of reels titled "Folk Music Collection" which may or may not be copies of each other. However, tapes containing Guthrie performing his songs are included. Whether these are copies of commercial recordings is unclear.
Series II: Performances contains musical and theatrical performances, at venues ranging from college campuses such as the University of Southern California to Vincennes University to Dudley Rigg's Experimental Theater Company in Minneapolis, MN. Of particular significance are reels containing stereo masters and outtakes for the album "A Tribute to Woody Guthrie, Part 1" and "A Tribute to Woody Guthrie, Part 2." These albums were created with recordings culled from live performances of Guthrie's songs at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles) by artists such as Arlo Guthrie, Judy Collins, Richie Havens and Joan Baez. The 1968 Carnegie Hall concert was especially significant because it was the first time that Bob Dylan - backed by The Band - performed after his motorcycle accident in 1966.
Series III: Radio Shows contains recordings of radio shows ranging from 1940 to 1975. Most of these shows are memorial and tribute programs broadcast shortly before or after Guthrie's death in 1967 on stations across the continental United States. A significant number also include interview segments with Marjorie Mazia Guthrie. The collection also includes rare recordings of Guthrie performances on radio stations in the United States and abroad, including "Woody Guthrie's Children's Hour," recorded for the British Broadcasting Company in London in 1944 while Guthrie was on active duty with the Merchant Marine, and a recording of Guthrie performing "High Floods Low Waters" on Oscar Brand's WNYC radio show in 1940.

The Woody Guthrie Archives holds the following 45 RMP records, which were originally arranged in eleven record albums, each containing twelve record sleeves. These records include covers of Guthrie, Seeger, and Weavers songs, as well as songs by other folk musicians prominent in New York City during the 1950s and 1960s, primarily those published by Sanga Music, Inc., Fall River Music, and Appleseed Music. Also included in this collection are numerous foreign language translations of American folk songs, such as Guantanamera.

Woody Guthrie Historic Family Recordings
(Accessions 2009-16.01 - .93)
The Woody Guthrie Historic Family Recordings consist of 15 ¼-inch reel-to-reel audiotapes. Many of these tapes are recorded on acetate-based tape, which is inherently unstable and prone to brittleness, deformation and vinegar syndrome.
These recordings offer an intimate glimpse into the Guthrie's home life, including the chaos of large family gatherings, the oral traditions of Marjorie's European Jewish family, and glimpses of Guthrie singing and playing along to his own recordings. In addition, these recordings contain very early performances by Arlo, Joady and Nora Guthrie. Several reels also provide insight in the Guthrie family after Woody and Marjorie divorced, including reels from 1958 with a "panel discussion" between Marjorie, Arlo, Joady and Nora on topic such as space travel and integration.
The Woody Guthrie Historic Family Recordings are arranged alphabetically by title. Many of these recordings are in formats that cannot be played back at the Woody Guthrie Archives; however, the boxes and track lists are made available, in-house, to researchers. Due to the fragile nature of the Collection, access to the tapes is limited, and tapes are unavailable for playback. CD Audio access copies exist for some tape. Consult Archivist for further information. This Collection is restricted.

Woody Guthrie's Personal Record Collection
Woody Guthrie's Personal Record Collection consists of albums personally owned by Guthrie, as well as Albums released by Guthrie, and represents an important component to the Archives. These records provide researchers with insight into Guthrie's own musical influences. Guthrie himself annotated many of the record jackets, noting how he acquired the record, the date he received the album, and his thoughts on either the artist or the lyrics. In addition, many of Guthrie's albums are adorned with his original artwork - doodles and drawings covering the liner notes of some of the record jackets.
Of particular note in this Collection is Guthrie's copy of Lead Belly's Musiccraft Corporation undated album entitled "Negro Sinful Songs sung by Lead Belly" (acc. #2008-110). This 4-disc album contains a love letter which Guthrie wrote to 'Mama and Cathy' on November 18 th , 1943. In this letter he discusses the different houses he has lived in with Marjorie ('Mama') and the way in which the music they played in each house changed the way it felt; proclaiming his love for '3520', the home they shared on Mermaid Avenue. Guthrie ends his letter with the comments "gosh! What are folks gonna think when they look here and see such a long inscription? Well, we don't care. At least I don't. In a very few days I guess I'll be shipping out again for my second time. I just want you to know that I love you - tonight. Woody."
In addition, Guthrie's copy of Asch Records' "American Folksay Ballads and Dances" (acc. #2008-100), dates January 16 th , 1945, is noteworthy in that it contains extensive notes by Guthrie describing the evolution of his thoughts on the album, gained through listening to the record several times. At one point, Guthrie notes "I felt ashamed because I helped to make it. I wanted to melt the wax up and pour it back to the factory and my hands ached to grab all of the records off the market and toss them back to their moulds. It sounded so bad I wanted to just get up and run away somewhere and never come back." However, Guthrie has a change of heart, likening the album to a "wild and fiery and rough and tumble" kid, which he appreciates more than the smooth and quiet kids. Following his introduction is a detailed description of the songs that he considers to be his favorites.
Woody Guthrie's Record Collection consists of approximately 50 individual discs (30 albums), many of which are extremely fragile and some of which are broken. The Archives has the capabilities to play these albums, however, their value to researchers lies primarily in the annotations by Guthrie, and it is Archives policy not to play these albums unless absolutely necessary.
